Anthropocene
Carousel star-accordion Adobe Design suite 2016 Edition of 6 This book is inspired by the bleaching of our ocean's coral reef ecosystems. Each scene in this accordion book shows a once healthy coral reef becoming increasingly more bleached and barren. The title, Anthropocene, is a term used to describe our current geological age. While not universally accepted yet, geologists have begun to separate the Anthropocene from its prior epoch, the Holocene, due to evidence of human impact on the climate and environment. |

Why so many forms?
Tunnel book with tri-fold case Adobe design suite 2016 Edition of 4 I've been contemplating that question for a number of years and even tried collecting them. As a result of my efforts I have an assemblage of bugs, casings and bones scatters around my studio as well as several notebooks filled with obscure research. Capturing the artifacts and jotting down notes is simple and potentially meaningless; the challenge comes when I try to find a place for it. Each time I discover some piece of new information, I've got to put it somewhere, place it within a biosphere and try to understand the purpose it serves within that web of living forms. It's messy and every new discovery leads to a multitude of questions, finally resulting in that first question that fueled them all--why so many forms? |

Evidence of Change
Hinge box with artifacts inside 2016 Edition of 6 Inside each box is a bundle of 42 cards tethered together in a wrapped envelope, two artifact examples showing “evidence of change”, and a scroll detailing the list of all the artifacts in the project. The 42-card bundle tells the story of how the world has changed since the day I was born. This fractured narrative tells the story of human population growth since May 24th, 1985, rat population growth, rat population control methods utilized by humans, and four endlings. The term “endling” is the name given to the last living animal in a species or subspecies. The four endlings of this story are a golden toad, a Pyrenean ibex, a fringed-limbed tree frog and a giant tortoise from the Galapagos Islands. Throughout the book the endlings die because of human intervention while the rat populations thrive in spite of human intervention. |

The Idea of an Endling
drum leaf binding walnut ink and gouache 2017 The Idea of an Endling is a drum-leaf binding, hand-stitched, painted and written in foundational hand calligraphy. This project takes one of the main characters from Evidence of Change, Lonesome George, the giant tortoise from the Galapagos, and digs further into his story. This book highlights the effect human contact has had on populations of animals that appear to be in an abundance, leading to uncontrolled hunting, followed by a complete decimation, and in Lonesome George’s case the death of an endling. The theme of this story is much like Evidence of Change because it balances the impact of human interaction with the limitation of human ability to control the final outcome. As it turns out, we are much kinder to an endling, than an abundance. |

Collective found poetry project:
This series of six books is created by nine individuals and their collection of found poetry. Their identities remain anonymous due to chosen pen-names. Each participant was given 15 pages of various literary works, from which they had to find their poetry and once complete mail it back. From there I began assembling under common themes. What I discovered was a collective language that carried an implication of being on a quest. Each book is categorized by the kind of quest it comes from, either personal, societal, directional or relational, It leaves me wondering that while we carry individual experiences, are we all in a collective human journey of finding answers in the chaos? |
